How Can I Protect My Computer From Viruses

Computer viruses are in high densities over the Internet and if the user is not careful then they can damage the entire computer system of the user and can even put user’s personal information in serious danger. There are many common ways a person can run across a computer virus; which are downloading from or visiting an untrusted Web Site. Downloading from questionable sources such as torrents, illegal music, games, cracked software’s or movies are the most common ways to harm own computer. Downloaded files can contain malicious files and can result in damage to the user’s system.

The ways by which a user can protect his or her computer are:

Anti-virus software: These should be used on the system for preventing any virus to enter the system or preventing any sort of attack by the viruses. The anti-virus software should be updated regularly as the number of viruses are increasing at an alarming rate and are multiplying day by day. Use of Firewall: Windows Firewall or any other firewall can help the user to identify suspicious activity if a virus or worm attempts to connect to the user’s computer. It can also block viruses, worms, and hackers from attempting to download potentially harmful programs to the user’s computer. Blocking the pop-ups: The pop ups should be blocked with the browser. Pop-up windows are small browser windows that appear on top of the website when viewing the website. Although most are created by advertisers, they can also contain malicious or unsafe code. A pop-up blocker can prevent some or all of these windows from appearing. Clearing the Internet cache and browsing history: Most of the browsers store information about the websites visited, and information that websites might have asked the user such as name and address. While it can be helpful to have these details stored on the computer, there are times when the user might want to delete some or all of them. In case of a public computer (can be in a cyber cafe) the user would never want to leave his or her personal information behind. So it is always beneficial to clean the cache and browsing data on a regular basis.

Some of the other methods are not accessing the websites which are untrusted and not clicking on to any unknown link or email from unknown sender which can turn miserable for the user.
