How Do I Get a Replacement Social Security Card
Every citizen of the United States has a Social Security card. This card is necessary not only for paying taxes but it also serves as identification card for all legal citizens in the country. The card has a unique 9 digit number that gives relevant authorities details about you and your status as a U.S citizen. After retirement, the social security card allows you to get retirement benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and even in case of disability the card qualifies you to apply for government grants. Losing your Social Security card can be a big problem for anyone because all the amenities mentioned above cannot be accessed without the card.
But they do get lost and if you happen to lose your Social Security Card however, there is recourse. You can apply for a replacement through the SSA’s website. On the website, you will find a form, named SS-5 which you should go ahead and download it. Once you have done this, fill out the form as per the instructions given. Head to the nearest Social Security office and submit the form to the person in charge. However if you do not know he nearest Social Security Office I your vicinity, you can get details from the SSA website on the location of the closest office.
When submitting the form, you have to show proof of your citizenship in the U.S. On top of this you have to prove your identity as well. The main reason why you have to do this is to avoid instances of identity theft. So when you are going to their offices, make sure you carry your birth certificate with you or a passport, military ID or even a Certificate of Naturalization. In the event you do not have these documents with you, you can also present the card issued by your health care provider but this card should have your photograph, your name as well as age and gender.
There have been incidences where a person’s identity was stolen through their Social Security Card. When a person has your Social Security card or pein, they have access to most of your information which can be used to steal your money, retirement fund and even your property.
Upon submission of the form and all other relevant documents, the Social Security Office will begin the process of renewing your card. Of course the whole process will take a couple of weeks so you should be patient. But you have to note that the SSA replaces lost cards three times a year and only 10 times in a person’s lifetime. So you have to be extra careful with your Social Security Card.
