How Much Sleep do I Need

Sleep is very important for the health. While sleeping, our body takes rest and regenerated itself. It repairs itself so that you will stay active and fresh throughout the day. How much sleep an individual need depends upon various factors like genes, age, working hours etc. The average time that has been defined for sleep is 8 hours. But this is not true for all. A person may be required to sleep for more than 8 hours or he/she may want to sleep for more than 8 hours for a better health. The right amount of sleep is very important for the people to do their day to day tasks properly. if they would not sleep properly and for right amount of time, they would start feeling sleepy in the day during their working hours. Most of the teens need 81/2 or 9 hours of sleep.

If they would not sleep for this much time, they would surely sleep in their classrooms while studying. They would not feel fresh when they will wake up in the morning. But most of the teens do not get enough amount of sleep for various reasons like they have to get up early in the morning for school, sleeping late at nights because of school work etc. Same is the case with adults too. They need 8 hours of sleep otherwise they would feel morbidity. They would not be able to give their best to their work. They would feel like taking a nap again and again in the day. They can experience:

  • Sleepy during the day
  • Tired
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Health problems
  • Reduced thinking power
  • Increased risks of accidents
  • Irritation
  • Increased risk of developing problems like depression etc.
  • Exhaustion

Sleep duration varies according to the age as:

  • Newborns: 12-18 hours of sleep
  • Infants: 1-15 hours of sleep
  • Toddlers: 12-14 hours of sleep
  • Preschoolers: 11-13 hours of sleep
  • School age: 10-11 hours of sleep
  • Teens: 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep
  • Adults-7-9 hours of sleep

On the other hand, an individual is not even supposed to sleep for long hours as it will increase the risk of mortality and morbidity. Too much sleep or too little sleep both is risky. Researchers defined it as a “U-shaped” curve. The individual himself should determine how much sleep he/she needs. He should start sleeping at a particular time at night and should wake up without an alarm in the morning. He should stick to this for around a week and he/she will come to know the average amount of sleep he/she needs.So sleep well and stay away all the diseases from your life and live a healthy life.
