What Are Computer Cookies

Cookies are basically small files which are stored on a user’s computer. When a user surfs the internet, the websites visited by him or her collects and records the usage information about the computer such as IP address or the browser which the user is accessing and tracks the activities. The Cookies are designed to hold small amount of data and can be accessed either by the web server or the client computer. This allows the server to deliver a page according to the user and is able to carry information from one visit to the website to the next.

As the user surf the web, most web sites send cookies to the computer to track the Internet usage. Most cookies are good cookies, used for purposes such as storing preferences, account information and remembering the choices the user have made on the site. But some cookies are bad cookies. E.g. cookies might track the users’ visits to different web sites to know his or her browsing habits, purchase history, etc.

Cookies include a unique identifier, which is sent to the browser from a web site. It is stored as a file on the computer and identifies the user as a unique user. Computer cookies can perform a number of functions i.e. they can monitor the visit throughout web sites, track how many times the user has visited the site, how long the user have been on the site, users’ log in information at a particular page to remember important information about his or her computer.

Cookies make the Web much easier to use and navigate by the capabilities it provides to the user. Cookies are included in almost every web site as these helps in providing a better experience and make it much easier to gather accurate information about the site’s visitors. The main function of the cookie is to provide people with the stored data and for this stored data the person had to pass through a step. The user has to send the cookies to the web browser. But if anyone gains access to the computer can read and copy these files as cookies are only text files thus the cookies should be cleaned regularly.
