Do you know what causes fever blisters? If your answer is NO, this content can help you. Fever blisters in the mouth and lips are considered as the indicative of oral herpes infection. It is a common condition, as twenty five percent of adults encounter this troublesome condition. This can occur or reoccur anytime.

The Causes of Fever Blisters:

Fever blisters, which are also known as cold sores are mainly caused by HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus). These viruses occur right after an illness or fever, body stress or after other instances, which will reduce the immunity. Though fever blisters are herpes labialis (definitive of oral herpes), the HSV-2 that causes the genital herpes infections will infect the mouth and cause cold sores instantly. Infections due to herpes usually occur when you are exposed to virus. This can due to direct contact with any type of fluids that contains herpes simplex virus of an infected person. Other contacts such as sharing cups, utensils, towels or kissing leads to HSV transmission to another person. Oral sex with an infected person can also result in such problems.

Once you are infected from fever blisters, the virus will stay in the nerve cells of the skin. These viruses will also lay dormant in nerve endings until they will be triggered and resurfaced to cause another outbreak. There are numerous factors that can trigger the outbreak of these viruses.

Factors that Trigger the Outbreak of Virus:

As mentioned above, there are numerous factors that will trigger the outbreak of herpes simplex virus. However, the reasons for this time-to-time awakening of these viruses are not yet understood. There are different factors seen in people that trigger the virus outbreak. Some of these factors are:

  • Strong wind
  • Exposure to bright sunlight
  • Emotional stress
  • Damages or changes in the skin
  • Hormonal or Menstruation imbalance
  • Physical stress like overexertion or illness
  • Tooth extraction and other major dental conditions

There are also different types of foods that cause fever blisters. Intake of foods that are too salty or acidic can also trigger cold sores. Therefore, if you have experienced these problems, it is better to avoid such foods. The viruses can also survive through the intake of amino acids. Make sure you will avoid foods rich in arginine such as chocolate, coffee, peanuts, red wine, beer, popcorn etc when you suffer from cold sores or fever blisters.

Other Causes of Cold Sores:

Although fever blisters are caused due to HSV, factors like nutrient deficiencies, reduced immunity, high-arginine food diet, gluten sensitivity, hormonal imbalance, emotional stress and diet high in acid can also cause fever blisters.
