What Is a Food Safety Inspector

Food items which manufactured in factories, served in hotels and sold in retail stores need to prove that the goods they are using are of good quality and will not cause any harm to the ones consuming these products. A food inspector guarantees that whatever he deems legal is safe to consume. He is also required to check the hygiene of the person who handles different food products. There is a process which a food inspector usually follows. It includes collecting samples of products for bacteriological and chemical laboratory analysis. He is also responsible for awareness of various food product related regulations. A food safety inspector also has to check for places that are used for cooking food to ensure they are always kept clean.

A food safety inspector should follow some guidelines and then prepare a report after the inspection which should be submitted to the relevant food and drug department. The reports may include check lists against hygiene, stock expiry and lots more. This report is very important to manufacturers or hotel establishments because it can put a stop on your business. Food safety inspector’s equipments may contain pen, pencil, flashlight, writing tablet, UV light, thermometer, inspection forms, copies of laws and regulations, watch, hair nets, gloves, aprons and microbiological sample kit. By using these equipments a food safety inspector can be considered as the food police.

One of the most initial tasks a food inspector does is checking of the staff for proper training and safe food handling. He has to not only check but even make them aware of new regulations and laws. He has to verify whether the staff has a legal food handles permit. He can also ask them certain questions to make sure that they know their duties well. Once the staff is checked the inspector moves on to the management. It is his duty to verify all safety measures that have been provided by the management are proper. He may ask the management as to what they have done to improve cleanliness and proper training to their staff

Cleanliness is an integral part of all food manufacturers as well as food establishments. He will do a thorough check up of the cleanliness facilities. This may include types of products used to enforce cleanliness. He may ask for log files or schedules of cleanliness. A food inspector will also be interested for any signs of infestations and pests. Since insects and rodents are the prime source for carrying various diseases around, therefore the inspector should make sure none of these are living there. He may ask for measures taken to curb diseases such as sanitation of washing facilities. Therefore a food safety inspector is responsible for approving and scrutinizing of food related areas.
