What Is Adderall
Adderall is brand name of amphetamine salts used to cure narcolepsy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It is believed to increase the amount of dopamine and norepinehrine in between brain synapses. It is substitute for those patients who are prone to side-effects of Ritalin (methylphenidate). It can also be used to treat obesity.
Adderall is sold as tablets and as extended release capsule Adderall XR. These are believed to cure narcolepsy. This disease is characterized by excessive sleeping habits during daytime. Abnormality in hypocretin levels in brain causes narcolepsy. Adderall is used to improve alertness among patients suffering from narcolepsy.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors and Adderall should not be taken simultaneously. It may develop high risk for hypertension due to concomitant use of these drug types. It does not harm fetus but is found to cause premature birth, low birth weight like symptoms in new born babies if it is taken during pregnancy. Other drug types that interact with this drug are Bupropion, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
It is found to increase cardiovascular disorders if taken over and above prescribed dosage. Adderall faced bans many times in US and Canada because of sudden casualties reported among children. But when it became certain that ADHD struck people are more prone to death due to their own behavior irregularities, its use got the nod from the authorities but only under strict medical guidance. Hence, in no case it can be sold as an OTC drug.
Adderall cannot be taken in case of prevalent history of agitation or pscychosis, cardiovascular disease or heart valve irregularities. Weight loss, troubled sleep, head ache, diarrhea, nervousness are some symtoms which should be reported immediately to the doctor if experienced after the drug intake. Change in sexual performance, mood swings, tendency to chew continuously or uncontrolled grinding movements of teeth are symptoms of great concern. Use of the drug in such cases should be stopped immediately and substitutes should be looked for.
This drug should not be taken during pregnancy or breast-feeding. Nursing baby may be harmed due to the drug passed into breast milk. Adderall capsules should not be chewed or broken. It is designed for slow absorption and intake of ingredients of capsule directly may increase amphetamine levels dangerously inside the body. This medicine should be taken with a glass full of water and preferably after meals. This medication requires constant monitoring and hence doctor’s visits should not be ignored. Regular visits to the doctor helps in understanding the effect of the medicine better.
This medicine should be kept away from sunlight, moisture or heat. Amphetamine has habit-causing effect and possibility of abuse cannot be ignored. Hence it should be taken care that no one in family takes this medicine without prescription.
