What is an Appraisal

Appraisal is the method by which the performance of an employee is analyzed or evaluated. There are various criteria on the basis of which the appraisal is measured. The criteria are as follows.

  • Quality
    This is the first criteria, which the employee has to fulfill. The work that the employee has done should be good quality. For example, if the employee submits a presentation, the appraisal will look at the quality of information that the presentation has as well as the way in which he has executed the presentation.
  • Quantity
    Just maintaining the quality of work is not sufficient. While there is quality, the employee has to maintain the quantity of work done by him. This implies consistency of the work, which is given to him.
  • Time
    The time taken to complete a task is also considered by the employer while appraisal. The analysis is based on the difficulty level of the task and the time consumed by the employee. For example, if the task was very simple and the employee has taken a lot of time, then the appraisal results will not be positive.
  • Behavior
    This is another aspect which is taken into consideration while evaluating the employee. His behavior towards the employees and to other situations in the work place should be judged for performance appraisal. This is a crucial factor which influences the performance of the employee.

The supervisor or the human resource manager have is the authority to evaluate and give appraisals to the employees. The performance of the employee and his appraisal share a direct relationship. If his performance is good, then he will get positive appraisal. Companies recognize appraisal by giving incentives and bonuses. Appraisal bonus can be in the form of cash, gift vouchers, company benefits, etc.

However, when the performance appraisal of an employee is not positive, it is the duty of the human resource manager to know the problem and make the necessary changes when needed. He should motivate the employee and ensure that he gives his 100 percent to the job assigned to him.

Once the appraisal is done, the human resource manager should give feedback to the employees. He should mention the positive and the negative aspects, which the employee has shown. He should help the employee to over come the negative aspects. This is also important to provide room for communication between the manager and the employee. This will help in strengthening teamwork and perform the tasks better.

Thus, appraisal is done in every company and firm, as it is the first step to evaluate the results of the company.
