What is an Ingrown Toenail
Ingrown toenail is the disorder which occurs in your toe’s outer edge generally. You can get to know about it if your skin near toenail turns red and pain exists.
Sometimes, you notice that the end of your toe becomes red and when you touch it hurts. You feel warn to touch sometimes but you don’t have fever however. After sometime you notice that an extra tissue has grown beside sharp point of your toe’s nail. This causes skin irritation and many times it leads to drainage of yellowish fluid from that area. All this is caused due to ingrown toenail. An ingrown toenail is the nail that grows inside the skin and affects outer edge of the toe. It may occur in one leg as well as both legs at the same time because it is a common disorder. If it is left untreated, it is affected by bacteria which cause infection in the skin and yellow fluid is its result.
Ingrown toenail is caused due to one of the several reasons. First of all, ingrown toenails is the result of tight fitting shoes or high heels because in tight fitting shoes fingers of legs are compressed together which forces nails to grow abnormally. This is the most common reason of ingrown toenails followed by improper trimming of nails. Improper trimming of nails means the conditions when you trim your nails in rounded. Nails should be trimmed straight across because it doesn’t allow nails to get an abnormal direction at the time of trimming. Heredity also causes ingrown toenails so if any member in your family has rounded toe or suffers from ingrown toenails then you may also suffer same because this disorder transfers from elder member to younger member. In rare cases, fungus affects your toenails and causes ingrown toenails. A normal injury can also be the cause of ingrown toenails as it may force your toenail to grow abnormally. Sometimes people who play games like soccer suffer from this disorder.
As we know that prevention is better than cure, you should know the ways how to prevent ingrown toenails. You should keep in mind while trimming your toenail that you trim it carefully and in straight across pattern. You should never trim it in rounded pattern because it will force nails to change its pattern. Apart from this, you should keep your feet clean and dry and always remember that you should wear fitting shoes in which you can feel comfortable. You should not go for tight fitting shoes.
Generally, treatment of ingrown toenails can be done in home but in some cases you should consult a doctor for proper treatment otherwise it may harm you. If it exists since long time then you should surely appoint a doctor for its treatment.
