What is Behavior Therapy

Behavior therapy is a kind of psychotherapy which is used to control certain unwanted behavior. The goal of behavior therapy is to increase the person’s engagement in social activities. It helps you to feel better.  It is based on the principles of classical conditioning by Ivan Pavlov and operant conditioning by B.F. Skinner. Behavior therapy is used to change some sort of behavior like quitting smoking habit, losing weight and eating disorders. There are two types of behavior therapy:

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) Applied Behavior Therapy (ABT)

Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on the thoughts and emotions like stress, sad, anxiety, anger and guilt. which results in unwanted behaviors. CBT focuses on your own habits and feelings to get emotional wellness. It helps you to change how you think and what you do. Instead of focusing on your mental condition in the past, it focuses on your present state of mind. It is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety and depression problem. It can be done on an individual or on a group too. But CBT is not a quick fix. It takes some time to cure the problem. A course may last for 6 weeks to 6 months. The duration of the session will depend on the type of the problem. CBT is a collaborative effort between the patient and the therapist. The patient has to express his concerns, problems and everything to the therapist and the therapist’s role is to listen, teach and encourage the patient and help them to take that problem out of their life.  The people who can be helped through cognitive behavior therapy are:

Applied behavior therapy is used to teach children those behaviors which they can’t learn otherwise on their own. Applied means practice. It involves observing the behavior, analyzing the steps involved in producing a behavior and then finally teaching that behavior. It is used as a basis of treatment on children with autism and other learning difficulties. It does have a positive impact on such children.

Behavior therapy is done by a trained analyst otherwise it can have a negative effect on the life of the people. CBT is a very powerful tool for those who are facing psychological problems to live a life on more satisfying track.
