Citalopram is among a popular antidepressant used to treat key depression. This is categorised under the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is generally used off label in United States which is available in various brand names like celexia, cipramal and citta across the world. Overdose of citalopram is not recommended because of its harmful effects.
Citalopram was firstly introduced by a pharmaceutical company Lundbeck in the year 1989. Later other companies started producing its generic versions after Lundbeck lost its patent in 2003. Citalopram is approved by the food and drug administration (FDA). Citalopram is taken as a single dose either in the morning or at night. Usually doctors recommend consumption of this drug at night as it has sedative property. This drug is widely used to treat conditions of anxiety, panic, premature ejaculation, diabetic neuropathy and premenstrual dysphoric syndrome (PMDD).
Before consuming this antidepressant drug certain precautions have to taken. Under certain allergic conditions citalopram is not recommended. While using MAO inhibitors or if any kind of cardiac discrepancy or lung disorders this drug is prohibited. Intake of citalopram under above conditions may lead to deadly situation. Consulting a practitioner before consumption of citalopram is a must. One must inform the practitioner if suffering from kidney malfunction, deficiency of minerals, QT syndrome because taking antidepressant under these conditions many lead to adverse effects.
Citalopram is not very effective to treat migraines. This drug may induce suicidal tendency among youngsters below the age of twenty four years. Citalopram is strictly prohibited during pregnancy and breast feeding. If this drug is consumed during pregnancy it may cause serious lung disorder to the new born baby. Also intake of this drug during pregnancy may lead from minor to major complication in pregnancy depending upon the quantity of drug consumed. This antidepressant drug is available in 10 milligrams, 20 milligrams and 40 milligrams tablets. This should be stored at a temperature of fifteen to thirty degree Celsius (fifty nine to eighty degree Fahrenheit).
Citalopram has various side effects. Some of the common and less intense side effects are dry mouth, fatigue, nausea, drowsiness, sweating, headache, excessive yawning and lack of sleep. Since this drug induces sedation it is usually recommended to be taken at night before going to bed. Severe side effects include vomiting, sexual dysfunction, anorgasmia, fluctuating blood pressure and irregular heart beat. Allergic reactions caused by intake of this drug without medical supervision might lead to cardiac arrest, suicidal tendency, hallucinations and even death at times.
Citalopram is an effective antidepressant used to control anxiety and depression. Under therapeutic conditions citalopram works well to treat depression, hot flushes, anxiety, sexual dysfunction and panic in patients. The dosage differs from the level of depression one is suffering from. Research has proved that this drug has not been effective in treating some autistic patients but has lead to adverse side effects.
