What is Civil Engineering
Civil engineering deals with the world’s infrastructure and involves work related to irrigation, bridges, dams, runways of airport, construction of ships etc.The most important branches associated with civil engineering are related with railways, engineering associated with hydraulics, coasts and oceans This engineering branch depicts the step wise procedure of buildings design, construction and process associated with its maintenance.
One has to opt for physics, chemistry and mathematics in senior secondary classes as three major subjects .The mathematics and Physics is very much essential for study of civil engineering branch. It has been considered as important field for those engineers who believe in making malls, big homes, roads, bridges and dams with great passion and endeavor. The major subjects which one has to do in civil engineering involves engineering related to structures, construction in environment, ,geo thermal stations, sewage lines and construction of tunnels.
The civil engineering is of maximum four years on general basis and if it is an integrated one combined with master’s degree in civil engineering then it becomes of five years. The course has mostly eight semesters and includes subjects like Structural Analysis, Mathematics, Design of steel structures, Fluid Hydrology and Environmental Engineering. The students have to attain minimum of 33% marks individually in a subject and overall 40% in all the subjects in particular semester examination.
Work of Civil engineers
It involves tremendous planning work. The planning phase includes investigation of sites, study of feasibility options, creation of solution of problematic situations which might occur during or after construction work. Some difficulties might occur during maintenance phase also .All the plans requires authorized approval of local, private or government bodies. Civil engineers work in a team or in a group with other engineers. Other civil work involves cost estimation and schedules of various types of construction to be performed at given location in predetermined time. Construction phase consists of interaction with architects, important clients, government authorities, contractors and supervisors of work in accordance with general standards and principles. They can supervise work at different sites of construction, manage construction and other work which is related to management, designs, research and can opt for teaching in government organizations and private bodies of concern. Civil engineers can work as technical consultants also.
The Civil Engineering branch offers very good job opportunities in India as well as abroad. A student with good academic scores can get high package jobs in good companies in India itself. The scope is tremendous and the growth in this field will continue in future. One can find jobs after civil course in projects related to road, constructions of huge buildings, consultancies, labs having work of quality testing and societies associated with construction of various houses. The remuneration part is very much attractive for future civil engineers depending upon candidate’s academic record and knowledge in the area. Countries like USA and Singapore offer excellent starting salary package.
