What is Collective Bargaining

A process in which the employees uses negotiative means to meet their needs and demands through their employees is called as a Collective bargaining. During the said period of collective bargaining, the workers through their representatives make an attempt to negotiate their terms by approaching the employer. Generally, issues like hours, wages, working rules, and work environment conditions are the sorted out in a negotiation.

Soon after a discussion is over, both the sides reach at an agreement to sign the contract on agreed terms. A final contract is also called as an agreement of collective bargaining that reflects all the efforts made during the process of collective bargaining. It is during the late 90’s that workers started agitating for their respective rights in their work place of employment. Workers formed union groups who could effectively used their skills as the best bargaining tools to enforce employers meet their requirements and needs.

In case when the workers demands or needs remained unresolved, a union relies upon using strikes as a means to protest against the employers upon the pending disputes. The union representatives includes some of the most experienced and skilled people who help the employees reach the employers with their reasonable demands and with a draft of final contract agreement.

There are number of joint meetings that are held in between the members of employees and the employer until both the parties mutually agree to sign on the consent terms of the contract agreement. At times  a union also uses forceful tactics like strikes, fasting or lockouts to enforce and make the employer agreed to the need of the workers.

  • Collective bargaining helps the workers to resolves many of the disputes relating to their working conditions, rules, overtime payments, working hours, basic pay, bonus, shift timings, holidays, sick leaves, medical and retirement benefits, and disagreement with other workers.
  • A collective bargaining makes the workers aware of their fundamental rights and its positive outcome helps them to improve their standard of living, lifestyle and balance their family and basic needs.

A collective bargaining written agreement promotes in establishing working hours, wages, benefits, rise in the basic pay and bonus, and other terms of the employment. Thus, offering the workers with benefits of working in a safe, secured and satisfying work environment.
