What Is Constipation
Constipation is commonly known as a stage that defines the condition of the internal digestive system wherein a sufferer faces a problem to expel.
Medical Cause of constipation:
Constipation is caused when there is over absorption of water by the colon. It is also caused when the colon muscles contract too slowly to affect slow movement of the stool and loss of water too. A constipated person faces the problem to pass hard stool or unable to pass stool for days together.
Other general causes of constipation:
Lack of proper diet and nutrition: People who eat food that are low in fibers like whole grains and vegetables tend to suffer from frequently from constipation. On the other hand consumption of fiber foods helps to prevent constipation by directly promoting bowel moments.
Physical inactivity: A physical activity helps to keep the body metabolism at a higher level besides promoting the proper functioning of the entire body system. Thus, people who are physically active are at a lesser risk of constipation.
Drugs: There are also several medicines that cause constipation like Narcotic, Codeine or Elavil and Tofranil antidepressants, Iron or calcium supplements, etc. A regular consumption of certain medicines can severely affect the digestive system of a person.
Milk: There are many people who are allergic to drinking milk and other dairy products. Thus they get constipated soon after consuming dairy products.
A syndrome of irritable bowel: People suffering from a syndrome of irritable bowel also get affected with frequent constipation.
Pregnancy: Pregnant women are more prone to constipation due to several hormonal changes at the pregnancy stage. The uterus generally compresses the intestine to slow down the food passage thereby causing constipation and discomfort to a pregnant woman.
Growing Age: With an ageing process, the body metabolisms slows down and cause decrease in the intestinal activity too. The digestive tract muscles also stops functioning effectively thus causing frequent constipation.
Disorders and Diseases: Persons suffering from Neurological disorders, Endocrine conditions, cancer, and dehydration also have constipation problem. This is mainly due to the slowing down of the anus, colon or rectum moments.
A Change in routine: Any change in the routine work can also affect normal functioning of the digestive system. A change in the sleeping pattern, food habits and delaying the urge of passing urine or stool can also lead to constipation.
Symptoms of constipation are:
- Passing hard and dry stools
- Difficult to expel stools
- Pain or bleeding from the rectum
- Abdominal pain and swelling
- Mild to moderate fever
A most effective treatment for normal constipation problem is doing regular exercise, eating more fiber foods, consuming extra water and taking proper laxative only under the expert medical advice. Yoga exercises will help a lot as well.
