Dermatology is a field of science which deals with skin and its diseases, hair, nails, scalp. The term dermatology comes from two words; Greek dermatos meaning ‘skin’, and -logy meaning ‘the study of’.
The doctor who specializes in this field and can treat all kinds of skin disorders and skin cancers is called a Dermatologist. These doctors undertake specialization course in dermatology after attending regular medical school and residency. He can choose a sub branch of dermatology for specialization like pediatric dermatology or cosmetic dermatology.

Cosmetic dermatology is the most instantly recognizable term which involves correcting imperfections visible to the eye like botox surgeries, liposuctions, face lefts etc. Immunodermatologists treat skin problems which are linked to immune system and pediatric dermatology deals with skin problems on young kids and babies. Dermapathology is a very complex field and it involves studying the skin at a microscopic level. This is used to diagnose any skin condition and disease correctly before deciding on a course of treatment.
Skin, being the largest organ of the body, and its disorder is nothing new and has been recognized for centuries before us. Ancient Sanskrit texts speak about skin transplants thousands of years back. It was only in the 19th century that France had the first dermatology school, Hospital Saint-Louis, in the year 1801 in Paris.
Dermatologists are trained to carry out surgeries too, ranging from small cosmetic procedures to cosmetic surgeries and even surgeries for skin cancer. They specialize in treating dermatitis and inflammations like rashes, hives. They can assess moles for malignancy, and make diagnosis about melanomas. Skin problems like acne, eczema, dermatitis, hair fall, moles, psoriasis, nail disorders, cosmetic problems, scalp conditions are some common areas for which dermatologists are consulted.
Cosmetic dermatology, in today’s times is a very profitable field as more and more people go for surgical options to look attractive. With advances in this field, people do not want to live with imperfections and want to get the best possible treatment to improve their appearance, so that they can lead a normal, healthy life. Cosmetic dermatologists do not just treat acnes and rosacea but are skilled to use laser surgery for removal of scars, unwanted hair, and cellulite.
Field of dermatology is big and complex and despite being very competitive field to get into, it attracts most number of people from the medicine field.
