What is Diuretics
Diuretics are called ‘Water Pills’ which help body to release fluids. It helps in lowering the blood pressure by causing the kidneys to produce more sodium and in turn helps in removal of fluids through urination. Diuretics are used as the first line of treatment for high blood pressure. It is also used to cure Edema. It is usually the swelling of legs. Diuretics can be purchased over the counter and are relatively less expensive. Some of the types of diuretics are:

Diuretics have nothing to do with lowering the body fat, though due to the loss of fluid from the body, little weight loss can be seen. Diuretics should be used for some days not for a longer period of time as it produces more urine which results in loss of water from the body which in turn can result into severe dehydration. Diuretics should be used with proper medication otherwise it can lead to kidney damage. Side effects of diuretics are increased thirst, increased urination for few days, weakness, little weight loss, increased levels of uric acid, calcium, sugar levels and reduced levels of potassium, magnesium, sodium in the blood. You might have to go through the regular blood level examination. Dry mouth and impotence can also be caused as a result of the side effects of diuretics. If you are using diuretics, then it is important to take potassium tablets as very low level of potassium in the body can lead to serious irregular heartbeats. Diuretic diet plan can also help in reducing these side effects. Eat small amounts of starchy carbohydrates, drink plenty of water which would help in maintaining the fluid balance in the body, avoid sugary foods and eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
