What is Endoscopy
Endoscopy is the examining process of internal part of the body done with the endoscope equipment. Endoscope is the equipment also known as medical device containing of a thin, long, flexible tube. The small light and a video camera are fixed in the tube to check the internal parts of the body. Through this device the internal images of the patient’s body can be seen on a monitor. This process is recorded so that doctors can ensure the results by seeing the reports again and again. Because of such feature it is also identified as minimally invasive diagnostic medical procedure. The results are oriented on the base of examination of interior surfaces of tissue or organ.
This device can also be utilized for allowing biopsies and retrieving the foreign substances. The process Endoscopy is a non-invasive substitute to surgery for foreign substances exclusion from the gastrointestinal area of the body.
Now the question comes is “when is an endoscopy used?” This process is often used to verify an analysis or diagnosis when other equipments like an MRI, CT scan or X-ray are considered unsuitable.
Some of the conditions are there in which the endoscopy is preferred by the doctors such as breathing disorders, Incontinence, Chronic diarrhea, Internal bleeding, Stomach ulcers, Irritable bowel syndrome and Urinary tract infections.
Nowadays the major use of this process is performed to diagnose the cancer disease as well. However, some of the surgical procedures are also performed with modified endoscope like removing the gallbladder, sealing and tying the fallopian tubes, and removing small tumors from lungs or other parts of the body.
As per records this device was invented in 1805 for surgical methods. However, it was containing the large tube and a candle at such period. Because of its size the procedure was little complicate and there were some limitations with the procedure. In 1960, Fiber optics took the place of endoscopy equipment and become the reason for revolution. The procedure becomes easy and possible with fiber optics cables as the doctor was able to see and record internal status of the patient’s body.
Today this procedure is used for many things as the device endoscope can be fixed with surgical devices. Endoscopy is capable to end the small tumors or gallstones, though there are some specialized endoscopes with their own names like Bronchoscopes (examine the lungs and air passages area), Colonoscopes (examine the colon), Gastroscopes (examine the stomach, small intestine and throat), Arthroscopes (examine the joints), Hysteroscopes (examine a woman’s uterus) and Cystoscopes (examine the urinary bladder).
While talking about the types of endoscopies there are Amnioscopy, Arthroscopy, Bronchoscopy, Colonoscopy, Colposcopy, Cystoscopy , EGD, ERCP, Fetoscopy, Laparoscopy, Laryngoscopy, Proctoscopy, Rhinoscopy, and Thoracoscopy. Every endoscopy is having different feature and used for diverse diagnosis.
