What is Ethernet

Ethernet is a physical and data link layer used for local area networks (LANs). Ethernet was invented by engineer Robert Metcalfe. The movement of Ethernet cables is limited and is up to about 100 meters, but Ethernet networks can be easily extended to connect an organization’s office building using network Device Bridge.

Ethernet port is used to connect to the Ethernet cables and is often called as plugs or caps. These ports accept which are having RJ 45 jack. Earlier, Ethernet supported a throughput of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) but then the Ethernet standards increased to the maximum data rate of 100 megabits per second and now Gigabit Ethernet technology has extended this data rate up to 1000 megabits per second. Ethernet is also used as a transmission medium by Internet Protocol (IP).

Most of the computers include an Ethernet port for connecting to a wired network. The Ethernet port which is a part of the computer is connected to the Ethernet Network Card which is placed inside the computer system (most probably inside the CPU only).

The Ethernet ports are used in number of places. These ports are used on routers, in consumer electronics and so on. On Routers, a WAN port (or an uplink port) is used to connect to a broadband modem. Wireless modems normally include a WAN port and four Ethernet ports for wired connections. In Consumer electronics, Ethernet port has become a necessity. Most of the companies are providing an Ethernet port for home networking in these electronic devices. These devices may be digital video recorders and some new games etc…

Ethernet is mostly been implemented as a star or a bus topology. If a user is trying to use a network design that has some other topology (say Ring topology), and he or she is trying to use Ethernet then he or she could face some issues of using Ethernet with a Ring architecture. Spanning tree is one of these issues of using Ethernet with Ring architecture but these types of issues can also be sorted out now and the implementation can be preceded. The Spanning tree issue is resolved by using a master bridge on the ring that helps in keeping the topology fixed.

Ethernet uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) algorithm when transmitting packets over a network. This algorithm helps in transmitting the packets in such a way so that the collision is avoided. It sends the packets only when the way is clear otherwise waits for the way to get cleared to avoid any kind of collision.
