What is Gastritis
Gastritis is a condition that causes stomach upset in humans. It’s a serious condition that causes a lot of difficulty to the person which experiences it.
In gastritis condition the stomach lining gets inflamed. In such a condition the stomach produces less acid, enzymes that helps to break down food for digestion and mucus which protects the stomach from acid. A person suffering from a gastritis condition may also experience gas and diarrhea. Gastritis in not an uncommon condition, it can happen to anyone. Such a condition may be caused by bacteria, viral, fungus, from anti-inflammatory medications, lupus, even by cigarette smoke. Gastritis may acute in which severe inflammation of the stomach lining is caused, or, chronic which lasts for a long time. Erosive gastritis causes bleeding, erosions or ulcers.
People having gastritis can experience nausea, vomiting or pain in the upper abdominal. The doctor after going through the medical history of the client first, shall first prescribe a proton pump inhibitor medication to check if less acid in the stomach can cure the problem. The patient will also get a bland diet which is low in fat and acid. If the following medication is not effective then the doctor will prescribe an upper GI panel to determine if the patient is suffering from ulcer and according go ahead with the medication.
If it is found that the patient does not has ulcer, then the doctor shall do a test to check for the presence of H. pylori and other helicobacter species. H. pylori infection causes most cases of chronic gastritis which infects the stomach lining. It occurs in areas which has poor sanitation or can be transmitted through contaminated food and water. The doctor will give antibiotics and keep the patient on a proton pump inhibitor if the above bacteria are found and will continue with the following medications until the symptoms are resolved and the patient no longer has H. pylori. Symptoms of chronic gastritis should be giving importance as in chronic gastritis the presence of H. pylori bacteria can cause stomach cancer and a peptic ulcer if left unattended can turn malignant which can be serious.
The main purpose of the medications given to patients is to reduce the symptoms of gastritis and improve the stomach lining from H. pylori which has for inflamed due to gastritis. Generally most patients gets relief from gastritis with an proton pump inhibitor medication and after that with counter antacids like Maalox or Mylanta. The gastritis condition is not a fatal one but it can hide other diseases which the patient maybe suffering from like acute coronary syndrome or aortic aneurysm rupture, as such the person should always check with the doctor if the gastritis symptoms does not stop.
