What is GERD

GERD is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is also called as Acid Reflux or Heartburn. GERD is the more serious form GER i.e. Gastroesophageal Reflux. It is a chronic disease and once a person has it, it will continue throughout the person’s life. It can be treated but this condition comes again even after the full course of the medication. The person has to stay on the medication throughout his life, if he/she does not want it to return.

GERD occurs when the acid in the stomach flows back to the esophagus. It causes heartburn and irritation. When these symptoms occur again and again then it is said to the symptoms of GERD. If this problem causes complications in a person’s day to day life, then it has to be treated and the patient should consult the doctor immediately. Though the symptoms of this problem are not serious and severe but still these can be irritating. Sometimes, a person experiences a bitter or sour taste at the back of the throat again and again. The most irritating symptom is heartburn. It may be possible that if a person is experiencing these symptoms, he/she might not be suffering from GERD. These symptoms cannot be used as diagnostic guidance. So it is always advised to see a doctor as only a doctor will be able to tell you whether you have this problem or not by performing some exams on you. He might ask you the problem you are facing with your health and your medical history.

In some cases, patients have to undergo endoscopy to get the GERD diagnosed. GERD is caused due to our diet and the life style. Chocolate, peppermint, fried, fatty and spicy food, coffee and other certain food or beverages are the main cause of GERD. In our day to day life, we should try to reduce the amount of this kind of diet intake. Obesity can also be one of the reasons behind GERD. Any person of any age can get GERD. So in order to avoid this problem, you should try to take healthy and light food. GERD can be treated but it cannot be cured completely. To manage GERD, the main aim of the doctors is to reduce the gastric acidity in the stomach. Besides this, PPI therapy i.e. proton pump inhibitor is also very effective in treating the patient of GERD. Doctor can also prescribe you the oral medication if the condition is not so worse. It can be treated easily. There is nothing to worry about as it is not a serious or life threatening disease. The patient just need to change his life style and diet in order to prevent it from recurring this disease.
