What is Group Cohesion

The term Group Cohesion is a discovery of the modern day corporate world. The meaning of the phrase is quite evident from the combination of the two words- group and cohesion. For the successful establishment of the concept of Group Cohesion, strong interpersonal bonding must be present among the members of a group. Moreover, strong intra-group bonding is an essential component for successful group cohesion.

The very concept of Group Cohesion has been assumed to rise from the impact of social forces pushing the members of a group to bind together to face obstacles and perform better under pressure. It’s something like uniting for a common cause even after not sharing same set of thoughts at a certain time.

Strong combining forces must be present for the successful formation of Group Cohesion. Otherwise, the members tend to disintegrate over time. There is no doubt about that at all. The Group Cohesion is not a spontaneous process. There are numerous factors behind this. Amongst all the factors, social factors occupy the bulk. As per the experts, interpersonal attraction, a tendency for teamwork and external pressure are the most common social factors behind the very concept of Group Cohesion.

Let’s discuss an example of Group Cohesion. A, B, C and D are four members in a sales team working as a group altogether. A situation demanded them to work together and achieve a common target. In this case, external forces compelled all of the four members of the team to bind together, so that they can achieve the target successfully. In the process of working together to achieve the set target over two quarters they started to share a lot about their personal lives. They started to identify and understand the plus and minus points of each other. All these led to a sense of belongingness among them. They became best of the friends within those two quarters. This is a classic case of Group Cohesion.

Some of the factors which influence Group Cohesion have been mentioned and discussed briefly below:

  • External threats: In the presence of external threat from other groups, members of a group tend to bind in a strong manner. Intergroup performance pressure is a big catalyst behind the concept of Group Cohesion in the corporate world.
  • Success: When a team or group becomes successful in achieving its target, the interpersonal relationships become quite healthy. This is a strong facilitator behind the concept of Group Cohesion.
  • Entry barriers: a lot of people find it difficult to enter and join an elite group. But once the person becomes successful to enter the group, an amazing sense of belongingness engulfs him or her. This leads to strong Group Cohesion.
  • Geographical or educational similarities, at times lead to Group Cohesion.
