What is Herpes
Have you ever speculated what are those red spots on your lips or on your skin? They could be mouth ulcers or even blisters and patches. But look closely at them. They could also be signs and marks, which occur due to herpes. Herpes is also known as herpes simplex. It is a problem that erupts into blisters on the affected or infected part of the skin. Herpes is also a viral infection, as it is transmitted via the Herpes simplex virus and its two types. People may not suffer from any fatal problem when infected with the virus. The problem of herpes mainly takes its toll on the skin and surface of the specific spot of the viral infection.
Like most of the harassing and devastating health problems, the herpes simplex is not a single entity as a disease. It is something that does not affect a specific part of the body. There are some types of the herpes simplex like oral herpes or genital herpes. Moreover, the onset of herpes infection can also contribute to more viral disorders like herpetic whitlow, meningitis and others.
The most common type of herpes simplex is the oral herpes simplex. It is something that affects the skin on the face or the region near the mouth. The most distinct symptom is that red and sore blisters erupt on the face or near the mouth. The blisters will soon spread over the entire face or inside the mouth. As a result, the appearance of the person will change drastically for worse. At times, the viral infection may even make its way into the teeth and gums. This type of herpes is known as herpetic gingivostomatitis. It is more severe than the usual oral herpes simplex. It ends up in a deterioration of the dental condition of the mouth.
The next most common type of herpes simplex is known as genital herpes simplex. In this case, the same red sores and blisters will erupt on the surface of the person’s genitalia. The sores will be accompanied with inflammation or irritation. Any infection caused by the Herpes simplex virus can further lead to some severe problems like Bell’s Palsy which leads to a paralysis of the person’s face. Other effects of the HSV infection would include herpes simplex encephalitis. In this, the entire nervous system would be infected leading to mild but persistent mental disorders and problems for the affected individual.
Diagnosis of some of the blisters and sores on genitalia or the mouth is a bit tricky. The herpetic blisters on the mouth often appear to be sores caused by the common mouth ulcers. On the other hands, in most cases, the sores occurring on the surface of the genitals might appear to be like those of fungal infections in the particular region. Doctors have confirmed that direct skin-to-skin contact and unprotected sexual intercourse are the main factors responsible for the problems of most types of herpes simplex. However, in the midst of immunodeficiency problems like AIDS, the individual is more susceptible to such infections.
