What is Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that is seen in people due to various reasons. Normally, there are two main kinds of problems that can be indicative of the onset of Insomnia in the person. The person suffering from this disorder either has a problem in falling asleep or is unable to maintain his sleep for a long period of time. In either of these cases, the chances of other psychological disorders showing up in the person due to lack of sleep are very high. Therefore, the early signs of insomnia need to be recognized and treatment needs to be sought for before the ailment reaches the stage of chronic insomnia.

Broadly, insomnia is classified into three categories based on the intensity of the disorder; namely, transient insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia. Transient insomnia lasts for not more than a week. It can be due to change in time zone or due to physical pain that does not allow a person to fall asleep easily. A person is said to be suffering from acute insomnia if problem with regard to falling asleep remains up to a month. Such people need to ensure that they look into their routine and find out as to what is the exact reason why problems are seen in them. This stage can lead to chronic insomnia if the right kind of treatment is not made available at the right stage. In chronic insomnia, the person suffering from the ailment is neither able to fall asleep nor maintain sleep and this problem persists for a period of more than one month.

The main causes for the onset of insomnia are use of drugs, restless leg syndrome, Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, mental disorders and neurological disorders. Common symptoms of this ailment are as mentioned below. Most people suffering from this disorder are unable to fall asleep quickly and keep getting up at night. Some people suffering from this disorder are able to fall asleep quickly, but wake up early in the morning.

A person in whom signs of insomnia are seen needs to be diagnosed by doctors who expertise in sleep medicine. In most cases, it is found that insomnia is a result of side effects of medication for some other ailment. But, most patients diagnosed for insomnia are troubled by various psychiatric and psychological disorders.

Most cases of insomnia that are not chronic can be gotten rid of by rescheduling one’s routine and bringing in more relaxation. However, it is disheartening to note that more than 95 percent of the patients who are treated for insomnia undergo medication where the use of sleeping pills is a must.
