What Is Intrinsic Motivation
This type of motivation is derived from the pleasure of performing a task or the mere satisfaction of completing or performing a task. A person who is intrinsically motivated is capable to work on a math equation, say for instance, out of the sheer pleasure they are involved. This is because the solution or the outcome of the equation might be challenging and thus can impart a sense of pleasure to the individual. In neither of the situations, be it challenging or enjoying the job, there is no external reward that is involved such as a prize, a grade, students or more.
Intrinsic motivation in any case does not refer to the fact that the person will not seek rewards. It is more of implying that such external rewards are not sufficient just to keep the person motivated. An intrinsically motivated individual might want to perform better and thus gain better grades or rewards at work. Essentially, mere grades or rewards can never keep the person motivated and thus will not impact them performing a job. If they are absolutely out of the question to perform a task which they actually do not like, then there is no question of obtaining better grades or rewards at work.
Intrinsic motivation is something that is more applicable to students although, it relates to people at work. Students generally tend to be intrinsically motivated if their educational results are more related to systems that are under their control and thus possess autonomy of their thoughts. Also, it is more beneficial that students possess the required skill to achieve their required goals. The very belief that their skill is desirable and will enable them move ahead will help them reach their desired goals. Nevertheless, the keen interest would also form an important factor, where the interest to master a topic helps them to achieve good grades and thus gain betterment in life.
Professor Steven Reiss has developed a theory that explains all the human behavior, when it comes to the point of intrinsic motivation. Acceptance or the need for approval, the need to learn, the drive for food, honor, family, idealistic goals, independence of activities, the order for a stable and realizable goals and many such factors play an important role when it comes to choosing idealistic motivational factors. This model actually explains the state where people tend to differ in their different goals and behaviors. These basic desires are those that represent the various inner forms of desires that influence the outcome of an individual’s behavior. People can be motivated by non basic desires as well, but it certainly does not lead to motivation in depth and can only be termed as a means to achieve other desires as well.
