What is Lorazepam

Lorazepam is a medication which is used to treat patients having anxiety. Both the form of drugs that is the oral as well as the injectable one is available. The oral lorazepam affects the chemicals present in brain which are the responsible for anxiety & can become unbalanced. The injectable lorazepam is given to the patient to reduce the nervous tension and the anxiety before doing surgery and also to treat serious seizures which is known as the status epilepticus in medical language. The Lorazepam is among the group of medications known as benzodiazepines.

There can be many symptoms of anxiety which are feeling jittery, nervous, tense, apprehensive or fearful. Not visiting certain places or doing certain activities because of having feeling of fear. Having a high beating or racing heart. Whenever being nervous it becomes difficult to catch your breath. To have an unusual sweat. Possessing a knot in the stomach. Getting a lump in the throat. Feeling of fear while closing eyes, that one can die while sleeping. When talking about the treatments for the anxiety disorder there are generally two types of treatments for them the one is anxiety medications and the other are some special types of psychotherapy.  Through Lorazepam not only anxiety is treated but also short –term relief for anxiety symptoms can also be treated with it. But it is not suggested for daily use and should be used for a shorter period.  Lorazepum which is a part of a group of benzodiazepines medicines gives various effects on the patient’s body including reducing the anxiety, causing sleepiness, stopping the seizures, making the muscles relaxed, damaging short-term memory.

The effects of these category medicines can vary depending upon the type of specific benzodiazepine which has been used. These medicines accomplish their work by improving the gamma-aminobutyric(GABA) effects in the brain. GABA is a naturally calming brain chemical which can perform the function of slowing down or stopping some signals of the nerves in the human brain. That is the reason why the Lorazepum and the other benzodiazepines are called mild tranquilizers, calmers, or CNS depressants. The use of Lorazepam is not suggested to be given to children who are less than the age of twelve years. But if someone needs to do so then they must first have a talk with their doctor to know about the risks and the benefits they will have if they are given to children.

Though there may be times, when the doctor may suggest Lorazepam for some other problem. So there are some off-label examples here like treatment for agitation, treatment for withdrawal from taking alcohol, treatment for insomnia, Prevention of seizures, treatment of myoclonus, and treatment of spastic disorders.
