What Is Meloxicam

Meloxicam is a derived form of oxycam. It is a kind of drug which has analgesic and antipyretic properties. This drug is not steroid based and very much similar to pyroxycam.  This chemical derivative basically belongs to enol group. It is discovered by two scientists named Boehringer and ingelheim. This product is available by the name of Mobic as its brand name. It was subjected for approval to use in april, 2000. It works as an anti inflammatory agent by inhibiting the enzymatic action which leads to inflammation of joints. It is a member of NSAID family i.e. Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug. This drug is also useful in veterinary medication for dogs, cats and cattles for the treatment of arthritis. As happens in human, the biggest side effect of meloxicam in animals is the irritation of gastro-intestinal tract.

This drug works by inhibiting the release of a chemical substance called prostaglandin. It is an inflammation causing agent which gives rise to pain, swelling and tenderness in joints. That’s what is called arthritis. Meloxicam inhibits the secretion of two enzymes which are responsible for the production of prostaglandin. These two enzymes are cyclo-oxygenase 1 and cyclo-oxygenase 2 catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandin. As the reduction in the level of prostaglandin takes place, the symptoms associated with the chemical do not tend to occur.

Meloxicam is subjected to be taken in a very low amount such as 7.5 mg daily by a person who is suffering from arthritis. Its dose can be extended up to 15 mg daily by the prescription of a doctor. It should not be consumed by a person with the allergic history for NSAID medication. Pregnant women are advised not to consume meloxicam as it may be harmful for the baby. Patients undergoing the problem of asthma, heart attack, strokes and hives etc. should avoid the intake of meloxicam as much as possible. Taking this drug along with aspirin, a pain relief can cause ulcer frequently. Persons who faced allergy from NSAID medicines ever should avoid taking this drug.

Excess intake of alcohol along with this type of medication can be health hazardous. It can ultimately lead to severe gastric ulceration. Person taking meloxicam should not consume questran, colestid and welchol kind of medicines as they can retard the efficiency of NSAID medicine by inhibiting them to be absorbed by the intestines. This medicine should be taken regularly once it has been started. The dosage and cautions should be read carefully in the instructional guide provided with it. Intake of this drug with milk or food minimizes its harmful effects.
