Metronidazole is an antibiotic used to eradicate anaerobic bacteria causing infections in stomach, liver and pelvis. It is available in various forms such as tablets, ointment, capsules and gel. This drug is used to treat dysentery, vaginal infections and infections in small intestines. This drug is available under the brand name flagyl.

Metronidazole is an antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial infections in the body. This is effective for the infections caused by the anaerobic bacteria. These parasites grow in the area where there is minimal or no supply of oxygen, like abdomen, liver, intestine, vagina and pelvis. This antibiotic is not advised for pregnant women especially if they are in their first trimester. This drug is also not prescribed if the pregnancy is under planning.

Though metronidazole is a common antibiotic one should consult a medical practitioner before taking this medicine. If the patient is suffering from liver disease, crohn’s disease (stomach infection), anaemia or leukopaniea then this drug is not advisable to consume. Even under nervous disorders and seizures intake of metronidazole is harmful. A medical practitioner will decide the amount of dosage for any ailments while prescribing metronidazole. While breast feeding this drug must be taken only under medical supervision.

Though metronidazole does not have sedative properties but when taken in overdose it may result in nausea and vomiting. Sometimes coordination problems can also be seen. Usually overdose situation comes during a suicidal attempt. An overdose during a cancer treatment might end with seizures and mild paralysis. Tablets and IV cause side effects while taken as a overdose whilst the gel or ointment does not have any overdose side effect. Since this medication passes thru breast milk nursing mothers must avoid taking this antibiotic.

The correct dosage of metronidazole is decided by the medical practitioner based on few findings such as, severity of infection the place of infection, response to antibiotics, previous history of illness, prolonged medication, weight in case of children and other physical conditions. Self medication is not recommended as a difference in dosage might result in side effects. Metronidazole is used to treat few sexually transmitted diseases with a single/double dose in a day depending on the degree of infection.

It is a principle recommendation to prohibit alcohol during any medication. Reaction with other medicines might result in headaches and nausea. If there is a pre existing yeast infection metronidazole might make the situation even worse. Metronidazole is used to treat infections not only in humans but in animals too. Taking metronidazole as prescribed is very essential because although the infection might not seem to be there after early doses it might reappear later if the dosage is not completed. Common side effects of this antibiotic include diarrhea, vaginal irritation, nausea, dry mouth and sore throat.
