What is Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis is the disease caused by Epstein-Barr virus which transfers from one person through saliva. People can prevent spreading kissing disease by not kissing, sharing food, utensils and fluids for some months if they know that they are affected by it.

There are many diseases which are communicable in nature i.e. the virus which causes that diseases gets transferred from the affected person top another person via some medium as the result of which the non-affected person gets affected by it. Mononucleosis is one of the communicable diseases whose virus gets transferred to another person making saliva its medium. As saliva of two person exchanges when they kiss each other, this virus is transferred at the time of kissing. Due to this reason, Mononucleosis is also called kissing disease by many experts. Apart from kissing, this virus also gets transferred when the affected person shares food, fluid and utensils. Sometimes, coughing and sneezing can also act as the medium of transferring virus.

Mononucleosis generally happens to adolescent and adults. To be more specific, people of between 15 and 25 years of age are affected by this disease usually. Children do not suffer from this disease but sometimes they may go through some of its symptoms which are normally not recognized. For adolescents and adults, there are many symptoms by which one can detect if he is suffering from kissing disease. Out of the many, some common symptoms of Mononucleosis are fever, weakness, fatigue, skin rash, headache, night sweats, swollen spleen, swollen tonsils and sore throat. These symptoms have existence for some weeks. Effectiveness of symptoms such as fever and sore throat reduce in some weeks whereas symptoms like enlarged lymph nodes and swollen spleen takes more time. On an average, symptoms of Mononucleosis last for four to eight weeks.

As the result of Mononucleosis, you can have some problems like enlarged spleen and liver issues. When Mononucleosis causes enlargement of the spleen at extreme level, you can feel tremendous pain in the left side of lower abdomen. This can lead to some serious problems in your body so you should contact a doctor or physician as soon as possible because you can’t delay taking actions in these situations. When liver issues are taken into consideration, the affected person may suffer from diseases like hepatitis and jaundice. Apart from these, there are some other problems too which occur due to Mononucleosis but very rarely. This comprises of inflammation of heart, anemia and swollen tonsils.

As there is no therapy or surgery for Mononucleosis, it can be said that there is no proper treatment. Antibiotics are also ineffective when kissing disease exists in your body. Hence, all you can do to get well is take proper rest which includes no playing outdoor games, no sports but only complete bed rest, and drink plenty of fluids.
