What is Scoliosis

Scoliosis is referred to that condition when a person has spine which is not totally straight but bent. It is quite common in humans and most of the times it gets resolves itself and sometimes it can be treated by taking certain measures.

Scoliosis is the problem in which the spine of human bends to one side or bends to both sides abnormally. As the people who have this problem don’t have a straight spine, this problem is called scoliosis which means “crooked” in Greek. In scoliosis the spine of person may be bent in such a form that it may look like “S” or it may look like “C”. People who have this type of spine should not feel depressed or bad because every 3 person out of 100 have this type of spine. Spine of most of the people is slightly bent whereas few people have extremely bent spine. Small or slight curve in spine doesn’t cause much problem but people having large curves generally feel uncomfortable and face difficulties in doing some work.

A person can sometimes detect that he has scoliosis by seeing several things whereas sometimes they come to know about it after going for an X-Ray. Idiopathic scoliosis, a type of scoliosis in which there is no known cause, is the most common type of scoliosis as about 80% of people are affected by this type. In scoliosis, any part of the spine may be bent but most commonly seen cases reflect bending near chest area and lower part of the back. In children, most of the times, scoliosis gets treated itself as he grows. Sometimes, people doubt that their child has bent spine even if his spine is straight.

There are some common symptoms of scoliosis by which you can detect whether a person has bent spine. Shoulders of the person, who has scoliosis, may be of different heights i.e. one shoulder is slightly higher than the other one. Head may be slightly tiled towards one side and not totally centered over pelvis. Ribs may not be totally parallel to each other as they may differ in heights. Uneven lengths of legs, uneven hips and leaning towards one side are some other symptoms of scoliosis. You can detect it when you are putting on new clothes. If your pants are looking unequal in length when you wear it, you may have bent spine. Like this, there are many other things by which you can check it.

Age doesn’t matters in scoliosis as people of all age have equal risk. But when gender and genetics is considered, it matters a lot. Females have greater risk of having bent spine and person whose family members have scoliosis may also have bent spine due to heredity. You can get your bent spine straight by the help of braces and in extreme cases you may need to go for a surgery.
