What is Skeet Shooting

Shotgun sports are great fun and also a challenge to tune your skills towards the target. These sports practically came from the hunting skills which later got modified and given different names incorporating distinguished rules.infact shotgun sports was initially supposed to be a sport associated with royalities and  rich people. However, gradually things changed and even commoners started enjoying it with equal gusto.One such shotgun sport is Skeet shooting.

The term “skeet shooting” was derived from a Scandinavian word for shooting which was chosen by a lady named Gertrude Hurlbutt, who won the contest of naming the game. Skeet shooting is a kind of shotgun target shooting game where the player with the help of a shotgun, shoots the target which is normally a flying or moving clay target which is also referred to as “clay pigeons” so that a typical hunting scenario is simulated.

The shooter aims to shoot from a semi circle in seven positions and the eighth position falls between the first and seventh. The targets are thrown from either or both sides using a machine which is kept inside a high and low house. The shooter will have to shoot both single and double targets depending on the position he stands and aim at targets from a low house or high house. The whole set consists of 25 such clay targets.

There are some basic rules or rather precautions for all the beginners as well the regular shooters who intend to practice Skeet shooting or participate in any shooting event. All these basic rules are not only for your personal safety but also for the well being of people around you.

  • Take care in keeping the muzzle always in a safe direction.
  • Unload the firearms when they are not in use.
  • Try and keep your fingers always away from the trigger for you may never know that the safety in your gun could have got disengaged and that your gun is loaded with a cartridge.
  • Use only the right ammunition that suits the gauge of your gun as wrong ammunition could be even fatal.
  • Don’t forget to wear the necessary eye and ear protection.
  • Inspect your gun regularly by giving for service.
  •  Be aware of all the handling instructions of your firearm.

Skeet shooting existed even from the times of world war where the soldiers practiced shooting to specialize in shooting flying targets during war. The sport has gained popularity in most parts of the United States especially In North America. Skeet shooting has become a hobby for all ages wherein the whole family could enjoy together in a sporting club.
