What is the Difference Between Antiperspirant and Deodorant

Most of us must have experienced a travel in a jam packed train or held up busy in a crowded shopping centre and would have definitely observed a distinct sweat smell. Body odor is an unpleasant thing which can put you off easily and rather an embarrassment which many people face on and off. Sweating is a cooling down mechanism built in our human body which doesn’t carry any odor. Bad smell comes in with growth of bacteria on the skin. The other factors contributing to bad odor could be diet, health, genetics etc.

Most of us don’t step out of the house without putting on a deodorant or an anti-perspirant. Both these products are designed to effectively control body odor. But the way they fight the problem is different.

  • Deodorant helps in dealing with bad odor by just neutralizing the smell. This is done by the chemical it contains called the Triclosan that kills the bacteria which is responsible to add odor to sweat, thus letting the armpits to breathe. Where Anti-perspirants come into perspective, you have to know that it works in another way. Perspiration is stopped in this case which prevents sweating thereby restricting the growth of bacteria in it. So no sweat and No odour. In short Deodorants control smell and anti-perspirants control sweating.
  • Deodorants are considered to be light and mild on skin for they have no harmful ingredients in it. Infact there are also deodorants available with safe and natural ingredients alone. While on the other hand anti-perspirants contains aluminum which is toxic and also contributes to blocking or closing the pores on the skin to stop sweating. This makes them less preferable over deodorants.
  • Deodorants can be used on any part of the body that could give bad odor. Whereas antiperspirants are used mainly on the underarms to avoid bad smell.

Having looked at the fundamental factors of these products, it is also essential to know few facts about them considering the health and safety aspect. Studies find that there are likely risk associated with the use of deodorants and antiperspirants for the ingredients like aluminum and paraben found in few deodorants and such compounds could have links to serious illness. Beware; breast cancer is one of them. However, it is also agreed that such products from the cosmetic industry have become indispensable in our day to day life rather has become a part of life. It is left to each individual to have their own judgment and make a healthy choice.
