What is the Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid

Medicaid and Medicare are the two medical terms that sound almost similar however they are actually two different programs. Both however target to serve the patients suffering from numerous health problems.

Medical Program :

Medicaid is an assisted program while Medicare is known to be an insurance program.

Medicaid is the program governed by the state and funded by both individual states and Federal Government. . The payments of the medical bills are made through the funds of the state, federal and local tax authorities.  

Medicare on the other hand is governed by the federal. Since Medicare is called as a federal program, it remains the same almost in ever country and state. Medicare assists in reimbursing the hospital expenses through the trust funds

Medicaid is meant for the people who come under the category of a low income group. Thus, It serves the people with low-income irrespective of their age.  It is specially meant to aid pregnant women, blind, disabled, old age and children below the age of 19 years. Patients who are suffering from chronic and severe disorders or require any long term treatment can avail the benefits of Medicaid.  It offers a wide coverage to the patients to meet their medical and hospitalization expenses. 

Medicare on the other hand serves the people who are above 65 years of age having any major disability or undergoing a dialysis treatment. Medicare provides the patients with part care expenses irrespective of their income and dialysis patients. Medicare is meant for the people who suffer from kidney disorders or failure, permanently disabled and people who are above the age of 65 years. Medicare does not cover a custodial care, medication, and residential care, adult foster and assisted living expenses.  It benefits the patients for the maximum period of 10 to 20 days for their entire rehabilitation process. 

Term benefits:

Medicaid is known to be a program of federal state. it is considered to vary from one state to another under the federal guidelines. It is an agency of the State Medicaid that provides a nursing home care to the patients. Medicare is therefore known to offer the patients with long term nursing care benefits.

Medicare, on the other hand is a insurance program available to meet short term requirement of medical nursing home and does not cover any long term care expenses. Any patient can apply and avail the benefits of the Medicare provided he is admitted and having a continued stay of minimum three days in the hospital.

There are also people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid and are therefore called a dual eligible.
