What is Thyroid

A thyroid gland generates a chemical known as thyroxine. The functionality of our body depends on the production of thyroxine. By the term functionality we mean how our body metabolizes the food, how body grows, and how it reproduces. Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid. It is treated with little amounts of thyroid hormone supplement called thyroxine. Usually it is preferable to be taken one per day. It started with small doses, and later with regular doses. It is not increased till the TSH and T4 levels come down to normal. The known medications are Levothorid and Synthroid. Stimulation of the thyroid gland is handled by pituitary gland, which is at the lower part of the brain, which produces TSH in low quantity. In turn, this causes the production of T4 by the thyroid gland. When the pituitary gland senses less T4 level in the blood, then it increases the production of TSH.

Basically, high level of TSH and low level of T4 indicates that the person is suffering from hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid. A hoisted thyroid hormone level indicates a condition called as hyperthyroidism, an over active thyroid. An overactive thyroid can be treated in two ways. It can be done in either by inserting radioactive iodine or through surgery, in which part of the thyroid is removed. Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may not be detected in the early stages. It may take years to detect both of them. However, if one is aware of the causes and symptoms, one will come to know about the pattern. Generally the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which is an overactive thyroid are bulging eyes, weight loss, excessive nervousness, a rapid heartbeat, tremors in the hand and excessive sweating. Sometimes, swelling can be seen in the font of the neck, also known as goiter.

In hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid, the very first indication would be premature graying, i.e. before the age of 30. Hair loss may be another symptom. There may be patches of white, forming on the skin. Another symptom is, anaemia, which is a decrease in red blood cells. Constipation, thickening of the skin, constipation, weight gain, fatigue, sensitivity to cold, or may be slowdown in mental processes are few symptoms of hypothyroidism. Morning stiffness may be a symptom, which comes from arthritis. Sometimes, swelling can be seen in the front of the neck, also known as goiter. When immune system attacks the thyroid gland, it led to thyroiditis. This may affect the production of hormones by the thyroid gland. Generally, certain medications are used to treat thyroiditis. Thyroid disease may be genetic; it is always good to know if any of your family members, especially grandparents, uncles or aunts have had thyroid disease. A normal blood test would determine whether thyroid levels are normal or not, i.e. if the thyroid is producing sufficient amount of (T4) thyroxine and the TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). If it is suspected, then an inexpensive test known as the T, which will indicate if thyroid hormones levels are normal or not.

Thyroid disease can be treated easily. In order to treat hypothyroidism, simply take one hormone supplement or thyroid supplements once in a day aqnd it will keep you going
