What is Turf Toe
Turf toe is a condition in which the patient feels pain at the base of the big toe. It can be very vigorous for the players as it can sideline many players. It is not as simple as it seems to be. This condition can be very painful. Turf toe is mostly common in athletes like footballers. If a footballer is suffering from turf toe then it will be very difficult for him to play football again in that condition.
Turf toe can spoil a player’s career. Turf toe is a sprain in the ligament of the big toe. The main and a common symptom of turf toe is pain at the base of the big toe but some of the people also complain that they feel stiffness and numbness in the big toe. The athletes suffer from this condition because they compete on artificial turf. With regular jumping and jamming, athletes start feeling pain at the base of the big toe. But the people who give extreme pressure on their toe and its muscles can also get a turf toe. Dancers can also suffer from this condition.
Turf toe can be treated but the problem can return again in future. Turf toe is a sudden injury and the doctor should be immediately consulted. If it is not possible, then you should apply ice on the injury and then apply a compression bandage. You should take rest as much as possible as it would definitely reduce the pain. The turf toe can be diagnosed through an X-ray exam, ultrasound etc. Follow the doctor’s instruction strictly and always wear a shoe that has a firm sole so that it would prevent your foot from bending. The recovery of turf toe depends on how bad the sprain is. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to recover. Turf toe can be classified into 3 grades:
Grade1: in this, minor injury is there. There are no big complications.
Grade2: in this, big toe suffers from partial injury and tear of capsuloligamentous.
Grade3: in this, there is a major injury and it causes complete tear of capsuloligamentous.
Athletes can avoid this condition be taking some precautions like he should adopt a good technique to play. He should try not to put his entire body weight on his toes. It also depends on how experienced the player is, what his position in the sport is. He should always wear comfortable shoes that give proper comfort to his feet. If the condition gets worse, the player might need to go through a surgery. If left untreated, it can cause many other complications for the patient in the future so it should not be taken for granted and should never be ignored.
