What Is Whey Protein

Milk is a source of many products from butter, cheese, to curd and whey. Milk is processed in different ways to get a variety of by products. During cheese production , a liquid is produced along with cheese and it is known as whey protein. A research conducted on rodents has shown that the whey has some anti-inflammatory and anti- cancer properties. However, data on  its  disease mitigating properties in humans are lacking and the studies are undergoing.

Production of whey protein
Whey is left over after the cheese is processed and mainly contains 5% glucose and other minerals along with lactalbumin. The whey is then processed to remove any lipid or non protein substance just to increase the protein constituent in the whey. Protein can be separated from whey by filtering it using membrane filter and they spray drying it. Whey protein is found in lot of dairy products and is denoted as a universal protein. The cow milk has 20% of whey protein and 80% of casein protein whereas human milk has 60% whey protein and 40% casein protein. The whey protein is a fusion of beta- lactoglobulin, alpha- lactalbumin and bovine serum albumin in composition of 65%, 25% and 8% respectively.

Significance of whey protein
Whey protein is an excellent dietary supplement for people of all ages. It is especially a great nutrient for people who exercise a lot to build their body as well as for those who are on diet to lose the body weight. It is considered the best source of protein having all the essential amino acids and especially the branched chain amino acids which are leucine, isoleucine and valine. Whey protein is known to stimulate the protein synthesis in the body as well as increases the cellular glutathione levels which are known to be active antioxidant which defends the body against free radical damage and toxins. On the whole it also increases the body’s immunity against diseases.Whey protein is also known to lose weight, and hence great dietary supplement for dieting individuals. As it is known the carbohydrates fluctuates the blood sugar level and protein balances it in the body. Since, whey protein balances the blood sugar level it makes people feel less hungry and hence loses weight.

Definitely whey protein is good for health and it enhances body’s immunity but it has some affects as well. Protein can be hard on your stomach so identify the right dose that  suits your body. High dose of whey protein leads to problems such as nausea, fatigue, and it augments bowel movements. If you are hypersensitive to cow’s milk then avoid dairy products. Pregnant women, especially breast feeding ones must avoid whey protein.
