Who are the Ancient Greek Gods
Religion in ancient Greece was based mainly on nature worship. The large number of ancient Greek Gods goes on to show the excess importance that was given to nature and the human form that was associated with each power of the nature. Greek mythology talks about many Gods and the powers that they had. It is interesting to note that most of the Greek Gods are shown as related to each other, which is identical to the case in Hindu mythology. Though there are a large number of Gods in Greek mythology, some of the deities have assumed utmost importance. The fact that planets have been named after Greek Gods goes on to showcase the importance that these figures have attained.
It would be worth mentioning here that, the Olympian Gods are the ones who were given greatest importance among the Greek mythological figures. The most important of the Olympian Gods was Zeus, who was considered to be the God of Mount Olympus. Zeus is considered to be the King of Gods. He is depicted as a sturdy figure with a dark beard. The animals, falcon and bull are associated with him. Apollo was considered to be the God of music, poetry and archery. Unlike the other Gods of the Greek mythology, he was a handsome young man without beard. Dolphin, rhoe dear, swans etc are considered to be the animals sacred to Apollo.
Another Greek God that deserves a mention is Ares, a strong mature man who is said to be the God of war, violence and civil order. He symbolized courage and power to the brave men of Greece. The armor and the weapons that he carried, speaks of this fact. The animals sacred to him are vulture and the dog. He was the son of Zeus and Hera. The other Greek Olympian Gods that were Aphrodite, Artemis Athena, Demeter, Dionysus, Hades, Hephaestus, Hera, Hermes, Hestia and Poseidon.
It is to be noted that, the space research organizations make use of the names of the Greek deities to name their space shuttles and space missions. The colorful nature of the Greek Gods and the immense power associated with them makes them an interesting topic to study. In addition to the Olympian Gods who are immortal, there are other notable personalities in Greek mythology, who have been given the status of Gods inspite of them being mortals.
